What do People Think is Happening?

What is it that goes through people's minds as they're waiting to drop off a new prescription?

A guy we call "Dim Fart" waited in line 10 minutes as I received new prescriptions from several patients. Once he made it to the front of the line, he handed me a new prescription.

"I'll be back in 5 minutes," he said.

"That's good. I'll try to have it ready in 30 minutes," I replied.

When you see people ahead of you at the pharmacy give a prescription to the pharmacist, what exactly goes through your head? What is it that makes you think once you get to the front of the line you'll suddenly be the only one waiting for a prescription?

I'm so confused by this nonsense. It happens again and again. Really?

Assuming good intentions, I have one thought. My pharmacy wants to know if you are waiting for it or if you will be coming later. If they list you as coming later, they don't call your name out when it is ready. Maybe Dim Fart didn't want the pharmacist to see him walking away and assume he's a coming later. Dim Fart would have returned to sit in the waiting area five minutes later but never have his name called.

If I'm going to do some shopping while I wait I let them know that I'm waiting but won't be in the waiting area but instead will be returning to the waiting area in a bit so that they don't put me in the wrong bin. If they don't say that, I have to waste more of their time. I have to get in line again and say hi, I was waiting for a script but I left for 15 minutes or so and I don't know if you called my name or not while I was gone.

Maybe they think it's a stack (like the tray launcher in the cafeteria) rather than a queue?
