They Itch a Lot

One of our regular patients came by to pick up some scripts. She's really nice and is actually the wife of one of the doctors in the neighborhood.

After paying for her prescriptions, she asked me where we keep the bleach. I tell her, not expecting what's next:

"My doctor told me to fill my tub with water and add a gallon of bleach. Then I'm supposed to get in up to my neck to kill the mice."

Yes, she said mice.

A gallon of bleach? The mice?

I know your gallons are only 80% the size of ours but... WTF!!!!

I come across these WTF questions more often than I'd like so let me ask. Do you try to find out why or what the hell they are trying to do to try and help or do you just show them where the bleach is? I know my answer but I am curious what others would do.

Normally in these situations I try to intervene and find out what's going on.

In this case... the lady is the wife of a very well-respected MD here in town so I let it go.

WTF indeed. I know women who can't tolerate bubble bath or other common bath additives because it throws off their pH and leads to infections. A quick google search says 1/2 to 1 cup of bleach per full bathtub to relieve some skin disorders. But a gallon?!?

Sidenote: You currently have the t-shirt poll going and I don't know what type of design you were thinking about but if there ever happened to be some kind of merchandise with quotes like this on it I would have to buy a couple dozen and hand them out at the company Christmas party.
